Holocaust Educators Scholarship Available

The Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge and The Baton Rouge Jewish Film Festival would like to formally invite all secondary English and social studies teachers to apply for a fully funded scholarship to attend the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators hosted by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

The scholarship is funded by The Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge and The Baton Rouge Jewish Film Festival.  The scholarship was created to form a teacher cohort that would dedicate themselves to the mission of Holocaust education, to learning the proper pedagogy for Holocaust education, and to work to see the implementation of Holocaust studies within their curriculum and community.

Teachers who receive the scholarship will receive funding for airfare to D.C., lodging (2 per room) and registration for the conference.

The Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators is for middle and high school educators with five or less years of experience teaching about the Holocaust

At the Belfer Conference, sessions are designed specifically for middle and high school teachers, Museum educators and scholars to share rationales, strategies, and approaches for presenting the complex subject of the Holocaust to students. Participants hear survivor testimony and have extensive time to view the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition, Remember the Children: Daniel’s Story, and other special exhibitions and to use the interactive computers in the Wexner Learning Center. Seminar sessions emphasize planning and implementing units of study for Holocaust education in middle and high schools. Teachers who complete the program receive a set of educational materials and a voucher worth $100 to purchase Holocaust-related resources in the Museum Shop.

Teachers who are chosen as scholarship recipients will be expected to fulfill the following obligations during the 2009-2010 school year:

•     Pre-conference meeting and reception for scholarship recipients, May 18, 2009.

•     Assist in developing Holocaust appropriate curriculum

•     Teacher and class attendance the Jewish Film Festival (student film showing)

•     Student participation in the Jewish Federation of GBR and the Advocate’s annual writing contest for Yom HaShoah commemoration
